These pronouns are used when you describe a thing or an animal.

 

subject = it

A: What is it?
B: It is a guitar.

 

object = it

A: Can you play it?
B: Yes, I can play it.

 

possessive adjective = its

The dog is looking for its owner.

Note: If you don’t know the gender of an animal, use “it” or “its” when describing it.

 

possessive pronoun = its

It is very difficult (but not impossible) to use “its” as a possessive pronoun.

 

reflexive pronoun = itself

The computer turns itself off after half an hour of inactivity.

Use “itself” when describing machines or automation.

 

Note: When writing, it is important to know the difference between “it’s” and “its.”

it’s = it is
its = a possessive adjective or pronoun
