English Idiom Part 4- Lesson 24- Idioms Using Top and Bottom
1. From top to bottom = Completely; entirely; throughout.
The house was cleaned from top to bottom before the guests arrived.
2. Off the top of my head = Without careful thought or investigation; as an immediate response.
Off the top of my head, I’d say we spent about $500 on the trip.
3. On top of me = Physically pressing down or lying above someone.
When the shelf collapsed, all the books fell on top of me.
4. On top of each other = Placed in a pile; stacked.
The plates were piled on top of each other in the sink.
5. Over the top = Excessive or exaggerated.
His reaction to the joke was completely over the top.
6. On top of that = In addition to something, especially a problem.
I had to work late, and on top of that, the car broke down.
7. Top of the list = Highest priority or importance.
Safety should always be top of the list when planning a trip.
8. Bottom of the class = The student with the lowest grades or performance.
He used to be bottom of the class, but he’s improved a lot.
9. Top-of-the-range= A very high-quality or luxury version of a product.
He drove into the parking lot in a top-of-the-range Mercedes.
10. On top of the world = Feeling extremely happy or successful.
After getting the promotion, she felt on top of the world.
11. Thin on top = Balding or losing hair on the top of one’s head.
He started getting thin on top in his early thirties.
