English Idiom Part 4- Lesson 22- Idioms Using “Thing”

1- First things first = The most important tasks should be done before anything else.

First things first, let’s finish the report before we discuss the next project.

 

2- It’s just one of those things = An unavoidable or unfortunate event that happens without clear reason.

Don’t worry about the mistake, it’s just one of those things.

 

3- One thing after another = Many problems or issues have happened continuously.

This week has been terrible. It’s been one thing after another.

 

4- First thing in the morning = Right at the beginning of the day.

I’ll call the supplier first thing in the morning.

 

5- A thing or two about = To be knowledgeable or experienced in something.

She knows a thing or two about digital marketing.

 

6- There is no such thing = Used to express disbelief or rejection of an idea.

There is no such thing as a perfect job.

 

7- It amounts to the same thing = Two situations or statements have the same result or meaning.

Whether you leave now or in an hour, it amounts to the same thing.

 

8- The first thing = Something done or noticed right away.

The first thing I noticed was how quiet the office was.

 

9- Make a big thing about it = To exaggerate or overreact to a situation.

He forgot your birthday don’t make a big thing about it.

 

10- All things considered = Taking everything into account.

All things considered, the event went smoothly.

 

11- The thing is = Used to introduce an explanation or issue.

The thing is, I already promised to help someone else.

 

12- Seeing things = Imagining something that isn’t really there.

I thought I saw a shadow, but maybe I was just seeing things.

 

13- Do your own thing = Act independently, do what you want.

He’s never followed trends, he just likes to do his own thing.

 

14- Doing things by halves = To do something incompletely or with little effort.

She never does her work by halves, it’s always thorough and polished.

 

15- Best thing since sliced bread = Something outstanding or very useful.

This new phone is the best thing since sliced bread!
