English Idiom Part 4- Lesson 7- Idioms about Good, Better and Best

1. What is the good of doing/buying… = Questioning the usefulness or value of something.

What’s the good of buying a new phone if you barely use the one you have?

 

2. As good as new = Something is in excellent condition, almost like it’s never been used.

After the repair, my bike was as good as new.

 

3. Good for you = A way to show approval or encouragement.

You finally passed your driving test? Good for you!

 

4. Good money for (something) = To spent a significant amount of money for something

I expect it to work properly. I paid good money for it!

 

5. To the best of my knowledge = As far as I know; according to what I believe is true.

To the best of my knowledge, the meeting starts at 10 a.m.

 

6. It’s probably for the best = Accepting that something negative may have a positive outcome in the long run.

We broke up, but it’s probably for the best.

 

7. Feeling at my best = Feeling well or being in peak condition.

I didn’t perform well because I was not feeling at my best.

 

8. Bring out the best in someone = To cause someone to show their best qualities.

Her encouragement really brings out the best in me.

 

9. At the best of times = Even in ideal circumstances.

He’s grumpy at the best of times, so don’t take it personally.

 

10. Make the best of a bad job = Try to improve a bad situation.

The weather was awful, but we made the best of a bad job and enjoyed our trip.

 

11. A good head for something = Having a natural talent or ability.

She has a good head for numbers and works as an accountant.

 

12. A good food for thought = An idea that makes you think deeply.

His speech gave us a good food for thought about the future of education.

 

13. As good as gold = Very well-behaved, especially used for children.

The kids were as good as gold during the long flight.

 

14. At first it seems good = Initially appears positive.

At first it seems good, but the movie’s ending was disappointing.

 

15. Your guess is as good as mine = I don’t know either.

Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to predicting the weather.

 

16. Put in a good word for (you) = Recommend someone to another person.

I’ll put in a good word for you with the manager

 

17. A change is as good as a rest = Doing something different can be refreshing.

I took up painting during the break a change is as good as a rest!

 

18. A good memory for faces = The ability to remember people’s faces well.

He has a good memory for faces, even years later.

 

19. Make a good living = He earns enough money to live comfortably.

As a freelance designer, he makes a good living.

 

20. Do someone a good turn = To help or do a kind act for someone.

She did me a good turn by driving me to the airport.

 

21. Make good time = Travel quickly, faster than expected.

We made very good time and arrived two hours early.

 

22. Best thing since sliced bread = Something considered very innovative or excellent.

This new phone App is the best thing since sliced bread!

 

23. Best interest at heart = Acting with someone’s well-being in mind.

I only gave that advice because I have your best interest at heart.

 

24. Honesty is the best policy = Telling the truth is always the right thing to do.

Even if it’s hard, remember that honesty is the best policy.

 

25. For better or worse = Accepting all outcomes, good or bad.

We’re married now, for better or worse.

 

26. Things can only get better = The situation is bad now, but it will improve.

Don’t worry, things can only get better from here.

 

27. It’s seen better days = Something is old or worn out.

That sofa has seen better days, but it’s still comfortable.
