English Idiom Part 4- Lesson 20- Idioms Using “Side”
1. On (your) side = Not on our favor or operating to one’s advantage
We need to make a decision quickly, time is not on our side.
2. The other side of the coin = A different perspective on the same situation.
He’s hardworking, but the other side of the coin is that he never takes a break.
3. (I’m) on your side = (I) support you.
Don’t worry about what others say I’m on your side.
4. Got out of bed on the wrong side = To be in a bad mood for no clear reason.
He’s been grumpy all day must have got out of bed on the wrong side.
5. The grass is always greener on the other side = Other people’s situations often seem better than your own, even if they’re not.
She keeps talking about quitting, but the grass is always greener on the other side.
6. Look on the bright side = Be optimistic or focus on the positives.
We didn’t win, but look on the bright side we learned a lot.
7. To be on the safe side = To take precautions to avoid risk.
I brought an umbrella just to be on the safe side.
8. On my mother’s side = Related through your mother’s family.
I have Irish ancestry on my mother’s side.
9. A bit on the small side = Slightly too small.
The shoes are a bit on the small side, but I can still wear them.
10. This side of = Used for emphasis, meaning “within” or “short of” a specific boundary.
She’s the best singer this side of Nashville.
11. On the side = Additionally; as a secondary activity or item.
He works in marketing but teaches yoga on the side.
12. To one side = Set apart or not included.
He pushed the papers to one side and focused on the call.
13. Which side (his) bread is buttered = To know what is to one’s advantage.
He never argues with the boss, he knows which side his bread is buttered.
