English Idiom Part 4- Lesson 9- Idioms Using “Half”
1. Half the fun = Part of what makes something enjoyable.
Getting lost in the city was half the fun of our spontaneous road trip.
2. My other half = A way to refer to one’s romantic partner.
I’ll bring my other half to the wedding reception this weekend.
3. Meet you halfway = To compromise or make mutual concessions.
If you lower the price, I’ll meet you halfway and agree to the deal.
4. Half asleep = Very drowsy or not fully awake.
I was half asleep when you called, so I didn’t catch everything you said.
5. Halfway through = In the middle of something.
I was halfway through the movie when the power went out.
6. Doing things by halves = Not putting in full effort; doing something incompletely.
She never does anything by halves it’s always all or nothing.
7. It was six of one and half a dozen of the other = Two alternatives are essentially the same.
Whether we stay here or go there, it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other.
8. Half-baked = Poorly thought out or not fully developed.
That’s a half-baked idea it needs more planning before we present it.
9. Half a mind to = Considering doing something, often out of annoyance or frustration.
I had half a mind to walk out of that boring meeting.
10. Given half a chance = If only slightly possible, someone would do something.
He’d travel the world given half a chance.
11. Half a second = A very short moment of time.
She didn’t wait half a second before jumping into the conversation.
12. Go halves = To share the cost equally.
Let’s go halves on the bill it’s only fair.
13. Half as good as = Not nearly as good.
This sequel isn’t half as good as the original movie.
14. Half-hearted = Without enthusiasm or effort.
His apology seemed half-hearted, like he didn’t mean it.
15. Half the trouble = Part of the issue or difficulty.
Understanding the system is half the trouble, the rest is getting it to work.
16. Half the battle = A significant part of the challenge.
Getting organized is half the battle when it comes to studying.
17. Half hoping = Slightly wishing for something, often secretly or uncertainly.
I was half hoping it would rain so I could stay home.
