English Idiom Part 2- Lesson 9- Idioms on Driving

1- Driving me mad = Making someone very annoyed or frustrated.

This new computer is driving me mad!

 

2- Step on it = Hurry up or go faster (often used when driving).

Come on! Step on it! We’re going to be late.

 

3- Dead-end job= A job with no prospects for advancement or improvement.

I wish I could leave. This is a dead-end job

 

4- We are in a bit of a jam= In a difficult situation.

I wonder if you could help me out. We’re in a bit of a jam.

 

5- Hit the road= To leave or start a journey.

Come on! It’s time to hit the road, Jack.

 

6- On the road to recovery= Making progress toward getting better (health, finances, etc.).

After a tough surgery, she’s finally on the road to recovery.

 

7- In the fast lane= Living a busy and exciting (sometimes risky) lifestyle.

Ever since he got that promotion, he’s been living in the fast lane.

 

8- Down the road= In the future.

We’ll discuss expanding the business further down the road.

 

9- Put a brake on something = Slow down or reduce using something.

With all these bills piling up, you need to put your brake on your spending.

 

10- Give a green light= To give permission to proceed with something.

They finally gave us a green light to launch the new product.

 

11- Going round the circle (let’s get the point)= Talking vaguely or repeatedly; be indirect.

Stop going round the circle and tell us what actually happened.

and tell us what actually happened.

 

 

12- I had to eat my words= To admit that something you said earlier was wrong.

I said the project would fail, but I had to eat my words when it succeeded.
