Word of the Day: Stun
Use the word “stun” when a person is very surprised by something. This is a strong word, so make sure it fits the situation:
- Vanessa was stunned when she saw the repair bill for her car.
- We were absolutely stunned to find out that Bill and Elena were getting a divorce. (Notice that the word “stun” is often used in the passive voice.)
- Vishnu stunned everyone when he announced his resignation from the company.
- The kidnapping of the girls in Nigeria stunned the world community.
When used as an adjective, the word “stunning” means very, very beautiful or very, very good.
- Rihanna looks stunning in that dress.
- Christian Bale’s performance in that movie was stunning.
- You look stunning!
Sometimes the word “stun” means that a person or a thing is paralyzed or incapacitated for a short period of time.
- The police used a stun gun on the suspect because he was out of control.
- Jeremy was temporarily stunned by a blow to the head.
- A stun grenade subdued an unruly crowd. (This is a type of weapon that’s intended to disorient and confuse people–not kill.)
