When something comes from your mouth–food, water, saliva, etc., you can use the verb “spit.” Spitting is usually an intentional action:

  • A man spit something on the sidewalk.
  • The baby spit up some food.
  • People who chew tobacco spit it out when they’re finished with it.
  • A teacher sent some boys to the principal because they were spitting at each other.
  • It’s not polite to spit.
  • Wine tasters spit out the wine they taste so that they don’t get drunk.

There are a few expressions that use the word “spit.”

  • What are you trying to say? Spit it out. (spit it out = say what you intend to say)
  • This is an impossible situation! It feels like I’m spitting into the wind. (If you spit into the wind, it comes right back at you. Use this expression for difficult situations.)
