Word of the Day: Sleep
The word “sleep” is used for a period of time when the brain and the body have a chance to rest and recharge. This word is also used when a person is not paying attention.

- A person sleeps in a bed.
- A person sleeps on a mattress.
- You can also sleep on a couch.
- Where do you sleep?
- Yolanda slept until 10 a.m. this morning.
- She overslept. (To oversleep is to sleep for too long.)
- I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. I was sleeping.
- Are the children sleeping?
- It’s hard to sleep when there is a lot of noise or bright light.
- Did you sleep well last night?
In this next set of examples, the word “sleep” is used as a noun:
- How much sleep do you normally get?
- I need to get more sleep.
- Sleep is an essential need for anyone.
- Most people get an average of seven to eight hours of sleep per night.
- What time do you go to sleep? (Notice that the phrase “go to” is often used with “sleep.”)

- A nap is a short period of sleep, usually in the afternoon.
- I have to go to sleep. Goodnight.
The word “sleepy” is an adjective:
- David says he feels sleepy.
- He looks very sleepy.
- Margaret just woke up. She still looks sleepy.
- You look sleepy. You should go to bed.
