1- Keep moving the goalposts = To change the rules or conditions unfairly to gain advantage.

It’s hard to finish the project when management keeps moving the goalposts every week.

 

2- Touch base = To make contact or briefly communicate.

I’ll touch base with you tomorrow to finalize the schedule.

 

3- A level playing field = A situation where everyone has the same opportunity.

The new policy is designed to create a level playing field for all job applicants.

 

4- Neck and neck = Very close or tied in a competition.

The two candidates are neck and neck in the polls.

 

5- Back the wrong horse = To support someone or something that fails.
We backed the wrong horse by investing in that startup too early.

 

6- A major player = An important and influential person or company.
She’s a major player in the tech industry now.

 

7- Par for the course = Normal or expected in a given situation.
Delays are par for the course in large construction projects.

 

8- Keep (people) onside = To maintain someone’s support or approval.
It’s crucial to keep the team onside during big changes.

 

9- Horses for courses = Different people or things are suitable for different situations.
I think it’s a case of horses for courses—not every tool works for every job.

 

10- Heavyweight = Someone or something of great influence or importance.
He’s a political heavyweight with decades of experience.

 

11- On the ball = Alert and quick to respond.
She’s really on the ball when it comes to solving problems.

 

12- Play ball = To cooperate or go along with a plan.
If we want this deal to go through, we need them to play ball.
