English Idiom Part 2- Lesson 14- Idioms about Fire
1. Temper = A person’s state of mind regarding anger.
He has a short temper, so be careful not to upset him.
2. Fired my imagination = Inspired creativity or exciting ideas.
That sci-fi film really fired my imagination and made me want to write my own story.
3. Old flame = A person one used to be in love with.
I ran into an old flame at the reunion, and we caught up after years apart.
4. Had a blazing row = Had a very intense and angry argument.
They had a blazing row last night and haven’t spoken since.
5. Play with fire = To do something risky or dangerous.
You’re playing with fire by ignoring the safety rules.
6. Add fuel to the fire = To make a bad situation worse.
His sarcastic comment only added fuel to the fire during the argument.
7- Go up in smoke = Fail completely or disappear suddenly.
All our hard work went up in smoke when the files were deleted.
8. No smoke without fire = Rumors are often based on some truth.
Everyone’s talking about their breakup—there’s no smoke without fire.
9. A blaze of publicity = A lot of public attention.
The celebrity wedding took place in a blaze of publicity.
10. Burn your bridges = Destroy all ways of going back to a situation or relationship.
He really burned his bridges when he insulted his former boss.
11. Get on like a house on fire = Get along very well and very quickly.
We got on like a house on fire the moment we met.
12. Get caught in the crossfire = To suffer as a result of a conflict between others.
The kids got caught in the crossfire during their parents’ bitter divorce.
