Practice English Speaking by Talking about Beaches

Here is a list of 10 discussion questions with sample answers for practicing English speaking with your language partner.

  • When was the last time you went to the beach? Where did you go?

Oh, I haven’t been to the beach in a while! The last time I went was during the summer with my family to the Caspian Sea. We went to a beautiful beach near Ramsar, it’s a popular tourist spot!

  • What do people do at the beach? Explain.

People do all sorts of things at the beach! Some people love to just relax and soak up the sun, others like to go for walks along the shore or build sandcastles with their kids.  Of course, swimming is always a popular activity! You can also play beach volleyball, go surfing, or even have a picnic!

  • Can you swim? When did you learn to swim? Who taught you to swim?

Yes, I can swim! I learned how to swim when I was about 8 years old in our local pool. My dad taught me, and he was very patient! He showed me all the different strokes and how to stay safe in the water.

  • Are there any problems with jellyfish, sharks or stonefish at your local beach? Explain.

There are definitely some jellyfish and stonefish in the Caspian Sea, but they’re not usually a problem at the beach. There are warnings posted when there’s a lot of jellyfish around, and it’s important to be careful when you’re swimming.  Sharks aren’t really a concern in the Caspian Sea.

  • Have you ever played sports on the beach? Which sports have you played?

I have played volleyball on the beach with my friends, it’s so much fun! It’s even more enjoyable than playing on a regular court because you get to enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful scenery.

  • Have you ever collected seashells? Can you describe a shell that you have collected? What did you do with the shells that you collected?

Yes, I love collecting seashells! I have a whole box full of them from different beaches I’ve visited. I once found a really beautiful, spiral-shaped shell with a pearly white color. It’s about the size of my hand. I keep it on my desk as a reminder of the ocean! I also used some of the shells to make a small decoration for my room.

  • What sort of animals live at the beach? Explain.

There are all sorts of animals that live at the beach! You can find fish, crabs, seagulls, sandpipers, and even sea turtles depending on the location. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you might spot a dolphin or a whale playing in the waves.

  • Have you ever been fishing on the beach? What did you catch? What did you use as bait?

I haven’t been fishing on the beach, but I have gone fishing with my dad in a small boat in a lake. We caught a few perch and some catfish. We used worms as bait!

  • Have you ever been on a sailboat or a rowboat? How was it?

I’ve never been on a sailboat or a rowboat, but it’s something I’d love to try someday! I think it would be a beautiful and peaceful experience, especially at sunset.

  • Do you like to suntan? Why or why not?

I do like to suntan, but I’m careful not to stay out in the sun for too long. I use sunscreen and wear a hat to protect my skin. It’s good to get some sun for vitamin D, but too much sun can be harmful!
