1- Throw in the towel = To give up or admit defeat.
After several failed attempts, he finally threw in the towel.
2- Open the floodgates = To allow something to happen that leads to a large number of similar events.
The manager’s resignation opened the floodgates for others to quit as well.
3- Back to square one = To start over from the beginning.
The client rejected our proposal, so we’re back to square one.
4- It’s curtains for you = It’s the end or there’s no way out of a situation.
If you don’t finish the project by tomorrow, it’s curtains for you.
5 – Final nail in the coffin = The last event that causes the failure of something.
The sudden drop in sales was the final nail in the coffin for the company.
6- It’s not over till the fat lady sings = The outcome is not certain until the very end.
Don’t lose hope in the match, it’s not over till the fat lady sings.
7- Get cracking = To start doing something quickly.
We’re behind schedule, so let’s get cracking.
8- Start the ball rolling = To begin an activity or process.
I’ll start the ball rolling by outlining the first draft.
9- The end’s in sight = Completion or conclusion is near.
We’ve worked hard for months and now the end’s in sight.
10- It’s still early days = It’s too soon to make a judgment.
The startup is promising, but it’s still early days.
11- On hold = Temporarily paused or suspended.
The construction project is currently on hold due to funding issues.
12- Call it a day = To stop working for the time being.
We’ve made great progress, let’s call it a day.
