English Idiom Part 3- Lesson 27- Idioms about Sleeping and Dreams
1- Sleep like a log = To sleep very deeply.
I was so exhausted that I slept like a log last night.
2- Sleep a wink = Didn’t sleep at all.
The thunderstorm was so loud that I didn’t sleep a wink.
3- Light/heavy sleeper = Light sleeper wakes up easily; heavy sleeper doesn’t.
I’m a very light sleeper, so even the slightest noise wakes me up.
4- Nod off = To fall asleep unintentionally.
The movie was so boring that I nodded off halfway through it.
5- Dead on your feet = Extremely tired or exhausted.
After working a double shift, you look dead on your feet.
6- Keep my eyes open = Feeling extremely sleepy.
During the lecture, I was so tired that I could hardly keep my eyes open.
7- Fast asleep = Sleeping deeply.
Don’t worry about the noise, I’m fast asleep by that time.
8- Dead to the world = Sleeping so deeply that one is unaware of anything.
When it happened, I was dead to the world and didn’t hear a thing.
9- Lose sleep on it = Worry about it.
You did your best, so don’t lose any sleep on it.
10- Sleep on something= Take time to think before deciding about something.
When facing big decisions, I always sleep on the solutions to gain clarity.
11- A dream come true = A wish or desire that has become reality.
Getting accepted into my dream university was a dream come true.
12- Had (him) put to sleep = Euthanized an animal to end its suffering.
Our old dog was in so much pain that we had him put to sleep.
13- It was a nightmare = A very bad experience.
The entire trip was delayed and chaotic. It was a nightmare.
14- Half asleep = Not fully awake, drowsy.
Wake up! You’re half asleep and about to miss the train.
15- Go like a dream = Something that happen very smoothly and successfully.
The wedding went like a dream, everything was perfect.
16- I wouldn’t dream of it = I would never even consider doing it.
Borrow your car without asking? I wouldn’t dream of it.
18- Lie in on my day off = Sleep late in the morning.
I love to lie in on my day off and catch up on rest.
