English Idiom Part 3- Lesson 26- Idioms about Similarities and Differences
1- The spitting image = Someone who looks exactly like another person.
She’s the spitting image of her mother when she was younger.
2- The odd one out = Someone or something that is different from the rest.
I always felt like the odd one out at family gatherings.
3- On a par with = At the same level or standard as something or someone else.
His latest novel is on a par with the best literature of our time.
4- One of a kind = Unique; unlike anyone or anything else.
Her creativity and personality make her truly one of a kind.
5- Carbon copy = An exact duplicate of someone or something.
He’s a carbon copy of his older brother, right down to the way he talks.
6- Poles apart = Completely different in opinions or nature.
Example: Politically, the two candidates are poles apart.
7- Six of one and half a dozen of the other = Two alternatives are basically the same.
Whether we go by train or by bus, it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other.
8- A world of difference = A significant difference between two things.
There’s a world of difference between watching a movie at home and seeing it in the cinema.
9- In the same boat = In the same difficult or unpleasant situation as others.
We’re all in the same boat when it comes to final exams.
10- A far cry from = Very different from something.
Her life in the countryside is a far cry from the hustle of city life.
11- Join the club! = Used to show sympathy or agreement when someone has had a similar experience.
“I’m so tired of online meetings.”, “Join the club!”
12- A different kettle of fish = A completely different situation or topic.
Teaching adults is a different kettle of fish compared to teaching children.
13- A whole new ball game = A completely changed situation.
Working remotely is a whole new ball game for many companies.
14- As different as chalk and cheese = Completely different from each other.
My twin daughters are as different as chalk and cheese.
