Word of the Day: Net
There are many different kinds of nets:
- If you throw a basketball through the net, you score two points.
- If a hockey puck gets into the net, you score a goal.
- This is a volleyball net.
- He’s using a butterfly net to catch butterflies.
- She’s using a net to catch fish.
Sometimes the word “internet” is shortened to “net.”
- He’s surfing the net. (He’s looking for information on the internet.)
In business, the word “net” refers to the money that you make after you deduct your business expenses and taxes:
- She made a net profit of $89,000 from her business last year. (Her gross profit was $146,000, but she had to pay taxes and she had a lot of expenses.)
