The word “dish” is an important noun to use when serving food. The food goes on the dish. A dish can be a plate or a bowl or just about anything else used when eating food:

  • That’s a lovely dish.
  • Selma bought a matching set of dishes with this pattern.
  • We need some new dishes.

However, you can also use “dish” as a noun when talking about prepared food:

  • Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish made with fermented vegetables.
  • Tajin is a popular Moroccan dish served with couscous.
  • Guacamole is a tasty Mexican side dish that you can eat with tortilla chips.

Once all of the food is eaten, you have a lot of dirty dishes that have to be cleaned. The dishes can be cleaned by hand, or they can go into the dishwasher.

  • This dishwasher is loaded with dishes.
  • When the dishes are clean, they can be unloaded and put away.
  • Who does the dishes in your home? (To “do the dishes” is to clean them.)

You can also use the word “dish” when referring to a satellite dish on top of a building:

  • I have a dish on top of my house. It receives television programs.
