Practice English Speaking by Talking about Movies

Here is a list of 10 discussion questions with sample answers for practicing English speaking with your language partner.

  • What is your all-time favorite movie? Why?

My all-time favorite movie is The Intouchables. It’s a French film about an unlikely friendship between a wealthy quadriplegic man and a young man from the projects. It’s a beautiful story about love, acceptance, and finding joy in unexpected places. I love how it’s funny, heartwarming, and thought-provoking all at the same time! It makes me laugh and cry, and it really stays with me long after the credits roll.

  • Are there any kinds of movies you dislike? If so, why?

I’m not a big fan of overly violent or gory movies. They just make me feel uncomfortable and a bit uneasy. I also tend to avoid movies with super predictable plots or overly cheesy dialogue.

  • Do you like to watch horror movies? Why or why not?

I’m not really into horror movies. I find them a bit too intense and scary for my liking. I prefer movies that are more uplifting and hopeful.

  • What is the worst movie you’ve ever seen? Why?

Oh, I’ve seen some real duds! But, I’m trying to forget their names because I don’t want to inflict those movies on anyone else! Let’s just say some movies just don’t live up to the hype, and sometimes they can be really disappointing.

  • Do you think that films can be educational? Explain.

Absolutely! Movies can be amazing for learning about different cultures, historical events, and social issues.  They can open your mind to new perspectives and help you understand the world in a more nuanced way.

  • Are you addicted to watching movies? Explain.

I wouldn’t say I’m addicted, but I definitely enjoy watching movies!  It’s a great way to relax and escape from everyday life. I love curling up on the couch with some popcorn and getting lost in a good story.

  • Do you like to watch a movie many times? Why or why not?

I definitely rewatch my favorite movies! I love noticing new details and enjoying the story again.  Sometimes it’s even better the second time around! It’s also a fun way to share those movies with friends and family.

  • Would you like to be an actor/actress? Why or why not?

I think it would be fascinating to try acting! I’m a bit shy, but I admire actors and actresses for their ability to transform into different characters. It’s a really cool way to express yourself and tell stories.  But, I’m not sure I have the guts to actually pursue it!

  • Do you think action movies are bad for children? Explain.

I think it depends on the child and the movie. Some action movies can be too violent or graphic for young children, but others are just plain fun and exciting. It’s important to choose movies that are appropriate for their age and maturity level.  Maybe we should just watch a nice family comedy instead!

  • Which do you prefer, to watch movies or to read books? Why?

That’s a tough one! I love both movies and books, but I think I’d have to say I prefer reading. I love the way books allow you to create your own images and interpretations. But, I also love getting lost in a visually stunning movie! It’s all about finding what you enjoy most.
