Discussion Questions About Pets and Animals

Here is a list of 10 discussion questions with sample answers for practicing English speaking with your language partner.

  • Would you ever consider getting a pet? Why or why not?

Getting a pet is definitely something I’ve thought about, but it’s a big decision! I love animals, but I also know it’s a huge responsibility.  Right now, my apartment is too small for a dog or a cat, and my lifestyle is pretty busy with school and work. But maybe someday, when I have more space and free time, I’ll be able to have a furry friend!

  • What are the pros and cons of keeping a pet? Explain.

Pets have so many awesome benefits! They provide companionship, reduce stress, and can even help you stay active. They teach you responsibility and compassion, and they can even make you feel less lonely.

But, there are also things to consider. Pets require a lot of time, money, and care. You need to feed them, groom them, take them to the vet, and provide them with toys and exercise. You also need to make sure they are safe and happy, which can be challenging.

  • What is the best pet to own? Why?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer!  It depends on your lifestyle and personality. If you have a lot of space and energy, a dog might be a good fit. If you prefer a low-maintenance companion, a cat or a small bird might be better.

  • Are you frightened of spiders? What do you do if you see one?

I have to admit, spiders make me a little nervous! I don’t scream or anything, but I try to avoid them. If I see one, I’ll gently encourage it to go outside using a piece of paper. I know they’re important for the ecosystem, but I still prefer them to stay outdoors!

  • Do you know someone who owns an unusual pet? What is it?

I actually have a friend who owns a miniature pig! He’s so cute and smart! He lives in a small apartment, but he seems happy.   My friend has to be creative about feeding and taking care of him, but it’s worth it!

  • Do you think it is acceptable to test cosmetics on animals? Explain.

I absolutely don’t think it’s acceptable to test cosmetics on animals. It’s cruel and unnecessary.  Thankfully, there are many alternative methods available that don’t involve harming animals. We should be using these methods instead.

  • How do you feel about the use of animals for medical research? Explain.

This is a complicated issue. I understand the importance of medical research and its potential to save lives. But I also believe in treating all living beings with respect and kindness. I think it’s important to find alternative methods, like using human cells or computer simulations, whenever possible. However, in some cases, animal testing may be unavoidable, and we need to make sure it’s conducted humanely and ethically.

  • Do you think it is okay to eat meat? Why or why not?

This is a personal choice. I eat meat, but I’m mindful of where it comes from and how the animals were raised. I try to choose meats from sustainable sources. I understand that many people choose to be vegetarian or vegan for ethical or health reasons. I respect their choices, and I think it’s important to have open and respectful conversations about these issues.

  • What do you think of hunting? Explain.

I’m not a hunter, and I don’t think it’s necessary in this day and age. We have enough food resources available without having to hunt animals.  However, I understand that hunting is part of some cultures and traditions, and I respect that.

  • Do you think it’s okay to free animals that have been in captivity all their lives? Why or why not?

This is another complex issue. I understand the desire to help animals that have been kept in captivity. However, it’s important to remember that animals that have lived in captivity their entire lives may not be able to survive in the wild. They may not have the skills or instincts necessary to find food, shelter, or avoid predators.  Releasing an animal without careful planning could actually do more harm than good. It’s important to consult with wildlife experts and animal rescue organizations before attempting to free an animal.
