road is a surface on which vehicles can travel. The word “road” is a little different from the words “street” and “highway.” A street is generally found in a city in residential and commercial areas, a highway is used for high-speed travel, but we can use the word “road” when talking about almost any surface on which vehicles travel.

  • The road outside my house is quiet.
  • Several cars are parked on the side of the road.
  • When a police car has its lights and siren on, motorists are supposed to pull over to the side of the road.
  • The city is planning to build a new road to accommodate an increase in traffic.
  • Summer road construction makes travel difficult at this time of year.
  • Several road closures went into effect following the blizzard. (road closure = a road closed for construction or bad weather conditions)
  • Don’t stand in the middle of the road.

  • Michelle decided to take the high road and not answer an insult with another insult. (take the high road = to behave in a morally upright manner)
  • Donnie will take the low road at every opportunity and at any cost to others. (take the low road = to behave in a manner that is improper or undignified)
