Word of the Day: Humid
When there’s a lot of moisture (water) in the air, we say it’s humid. The months of June through August are pretty humid in Minnesota. When it rains in the summer, the humidity levels are very high. Many people don’t like humid weather because it makes them feel uncomfortable and sweaty.
The word “humid” is an adjective:
- It’s humid outside today.
- Many people go to the beach when it’s humid.
- We use a dehumidifier in our basement on days when it’s humid. (A dehumidifier draws water out of the air so it can be disposed of.)
- Do you like humid weather?
The noun form of this word is “humidity.”
- Today’s humidity is causing many people to use their air conditioners.
- This humidity is killing me.
- Do you feel the humidity?
- It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. (This is a common expression often heard on humid days. It just means that the humidity is worse than the high air temperature.)
