Word of the Day: Hug
The word “hug” is used when one person wraps his or her arms around another person. A hug is given to provide comfort, offer support, express love, or as a show of friendship.
In these sentences, “hug” is a noun. Notice that the verb “give” is often used with “hug.”
- Tom gave his son a hug.
- Those girls are giving each other hugs.
- She’s going to give you a great big hug.
- It looks like someone needs a hug.
- Do you need a hug?

- Hugging other people can help you feel better when you’re sad. (“Hugging” is a gerund in this sentence and the next one.)
- The tires on this car are good at hugging the road when the road is wet. (This means that the tires seem to grip the surface and don’t slide. This is a good thing!)
