Word of the Day: Frostbite
A person can get frostbite on the hands, feet, or areas of the face–especially the ears–if he or she is outside in the cold for too long. (The temperatures would be near or below zero Fahrenheit.)
Here are some examples of how the word “frostbite” might be used:
- Don was treated for frostbite after a night of skiing with friends.
- The children were told to wear three layers of socks in order to prevent frostbite from happening.
- Schools in Minnesota are closed today because school officials fear children who are unprepared for the cold could get frostbite.
- A doctor might need to amputate frostbitten fingers or toes if the damage to those areas is too severe. (The word “frostbitten” is an adjective.)
- Frostbitten toes or fingers should be placed in warm water immediately.
- A person suspected of having frostbitten body parts needs to see a doctor.
- You should do whatever you can to avoid frostbite.
