Word of the Day: Dot
A dot is a shape that is usually round and decorative.
When dots are used as a pattern for clothing, they’re referred to as polka dots. Polka dots are a popular pattern.
- This dress has polka dots. It’s a polka-dotted dress.
- This tie has polka dots. It’s a polka-dotted necktie.
Dots are used as symbols for writing and math.
- It’s necessary to put dots over the letters I and J when they are small letters.
- An umlaut in German looks like two dots above a vowel.
- A decimal point looks like a dot.
- Dice have dots on them. The dots represent numbers.
The word “dot” is also used when giving an address for a website.
At the end of the 1990s, technology stocks, especially internet-related stocks, were very popular investments. This is referred to as the “dot-com bubble.” In the year 2000, dot-com stocks began to decrease in value and eventually the dot-com craze came to an end. (However, as of right now, technology and internet-related stocks have returned as popular investments.)
