Word of the Day: Dog
Dogs have had a long partnership with human beings. They have been domesticated longer than any other animal. We depend on dogs for personal assistance, protection, companionship, and entertainment.
- A seeing-eye dog helps blind people walk through public places.
- A bomb-sniffing dog detects explosive devices.
- Drug-sniffing dogs help the police discover illegal drugs.
- A guard dog protects homes and buildings.
- Many dogs are useful when hunting.
- A lap dog sits in your lap and keeps you company.
- A dog is a man’s best friend.
There are a lot of expressions that have the word “dog” in them:
- The dog days of summer are the long hot days of July and August.
- Kids who aren’t prepared for school will often say, “The dog ate my homework,” whether they have a dog or not. (This is kind of a joke.)
- If you get really sick, you might be as sick as a dog.
- If you take a long walk, your dogs might start to bark. (Your feet might get tired.)
- I wouldn’t send a dog out on a night like this. (The weather is really bad–heavy rain or snow.)
- It’s a dog-eat-dog world. (People are very competitive, especially in business.)
- It’s best to just let old dogs lie. (It’s often a good idea not to let old problems go. Just forget about them.)
- He’s meaner than a junk yard dog. (He’s a very mean or dangerous person.)
- You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. (It’s hard to learn new things when you get old.)
- Every dog has its day. (Every dog has something good happen to it.)
- Hot diggity dog! (This is great! This is fun!)
- Do you like hot dogs? (A hot dog is a type of sausage made of processed beef, pork, or turkey.)
