Word of the Day: Attract
To attract is to create some kind of strong interest in a thing or a person. Attraction is initially based on appearance or an appeal to a person’s beliefs. This is a good word to use when talking about how people meet or remain together:
- Laurie is very attracted to Ralph. She likes the way he looks.
- Bob is attracted to women who are athletic.
- Many women are attracted to men who are confident in themselves.
- They say that opposites attract. (Opposites attract. This is an expression.)
- Some people are attracted to wealth; others are attracted to intelligence.
- What attracts you most in a person?
The word “attractive” is an adjective:
- What kind of woman do you find attractive?
- What kind of a man do you find attractive?
- There are a lot of very attractive people who live in the area of Los Angeles, California.
- If you want to remain attractive, you have to take care of yourself. Eat right and exercise.
- Bigotry and hatred are not attractive qualities in a person.
- The house we bought was attractively priced. (The word “attractively” is an adverb.)
The word “attraction” is a noun:
- Elena’s attraction to Alonzo is obvious.
- There are many attractions at the Mall of America, such as an amusement park and an aquarium.
- Peter’s attraction to spiders, snakes, and carnivorous fish concerns his mother.
