Family Questions

1. How many people are there in your family? Who are they? Where do they live?

2. Who supports your family? Who is the main breadwinner? What kind of work does that person (or people) do?

3. What are some traditions that your family follows? Are there any special holidays that everyone gets together for and celebrates?

4. How does your family make ends meet? (make ends meet: produce income, save money, and spend money on essential things)

5. Who’s responsible for raising children in your culture? What does the father do? What does the mother do?

6. How are families in your country different from families in the United States? Consider numbers of children, who lives in the home, who’s the head of the household, roles and responsibilities within the family, etc

Friendship Questions

1. How did you make new friends when you were a child? Describe one of your friendships.

2. Do you still talk to people who you were friends with as a child? If yes, who are they?

3. What are the most important qualities in a friend?

4. Neighbors are good sources of relationships. Do you have any kind of a relationship with your neighbors? Do you want to know your neighbors better?

5. In the area where you live, is there a place where you can you go to form new relationships with people?

6. How do you maintain your friendships? In other words, what do you do to make sure that you don’t lose your friends?

Childhood Questions

1. What are some of your earliest memories as a child?

2. What kinds of sports or games did you play as a child?

3. What did you look forward to the most as a child? What did you fear the most?

4. Did you have to work as a child? What kind of work did you do? Were you paid?

5. At what age did you feel as though you were becoming an adult? Can you remember some specific experiences that made you feel like you were changing from a child to an adult?

6. Do you still keep in contact with friends from your youth? If so, what are they doing now?

7. Which experiences from your youth are most responsible for making you into the kind of person you are today?

Home Questions

1. Describe the interior space of your home. How many rooms does it have? How large is it in square feet? Who lives there with you?

2. What’s your favorite room in your home? Why do you like it?

3. How is the furniture arranged in your living room or family room? On the other side of this handout, draw the room and show where everything is: the couch, chairs, tables, windows, doors or passageways, etc. and explain the way everything is laid out.

4. What are some of the differences between a home in the country that you come from and a home in the United States? Your answer should focus on the interior space. Talk about furniture, paint, decorations, curtains, rugs, carpet, floors, etc.

5. What is your favorite piece of furniture? Why is it your favorite?

6. What are some things that you like to do to make your home a nice place to be in?
